A federal judge gave tentative approval to a plan to pay an estimated 16,000 retirees up to $35 million to settle a class-action suit against the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. The proposed settlement was reached in a lawsuit brought by retirees who receive benefits from pension funds that were terminated from 1976 to 1981. The corporation was created by Congress in 1974.
