The World : U.S. Envoy’s Wife Stabbed

The wife of a U.S. consular officer in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was stabbed by a Haitian union leader. Debbie Rossin, wife of Larry Rossin, chief political officer at the consulate, was in satisfactory condition after surgery, her doctor said. Haitian police shot and wounded the assailant, who later identified himself as Kenol Joseph, 36, a labor leader and former employee of a recently closed sugar company. Joseph said he had tried to seize the American woman as a hostage as a means of pressing the United States to intervene to get the sugar company reopened.
