VICTORIA, Canada — A popular 4 1/2-hour ferry trip between this British Columbian capital and Seattle, plying the scenic waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound, will soon have gambling as an added attraction, the British Columbia Steamship Co. Ltd. announced.
On Saturday, the company will launch a newly converted 1,000-passenger cruise ship, the Vancouver Island Princess, with 104 slot machines aboard, the announcement said, and the 1,400-passenger Princess Marguerite will soon be outfitted with a room for 57 slots.
The gambling rooms will have to be vacated and locked when they cross the U.S-Canada boundary, about 12 miles south of Victoria, a spokesman for the Washington State Gambling Commission said.
