Plan to Ease Traffic in North County OKd

Hoping to reduce rush-hour congestion in North County, the county supervisors have approved a program to encourage car-pooling and promote the staggering of work hours.

The county’s “Peak Hour Traffic Management Plan,” approved unanimously on Tuesday, will expand efforts to encourage county and private workers to share rides, as well as study the feasibility of altering work hours so that fewer drivers are traveling to or from work during the rush hours of 7 a.m to 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Companies will be encouraged to voluntarily shift commercial truck deliveries to non-peak hours or to reroute that traffic to less congested roads.

To promote non-automobile travel, the county also plans to build additional bicycle lockers at its North County facilities. It may also expand the subsidies currently offered to county workers who commute to work via public transit to include employees who participate in state-sponsored van pools.
