Boice Leads Saddleback to Victory in Tennis
Mike Boice of Saddleback College won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Grant Hein to win at No. 1 doubles as Saddleback upset top-ranked Los Angeles Pierce, 5-3, in the Southern California team championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Club Monday.
Saddleback (18-2) will meet Cerritos in the Southern California final at 1 p.m. Wednesday at L.A. Pierce. Cerritos defeated Orange Coast Monday to advance to the final.
Boice defeated Dave Valastro, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, and Boice-Hein defeated Bob Grundy and Alex Olaya, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles to lead the upset of L.A. Pierce (17-2), which was ranked No. 1 in Southern California.
In men’s golf:
Southern California Championships--Saddleback advanced to the state championships by finishing third in the 36-hole regional at Spring Valley Lake Country Club in Victorville. The top four finishers--Long Beach City (753), Ventura (755), Saddleback (772) and San Diego Mesa (776)--advance to the eight-team state tournament Monday at Ft. Washington Golf Course in Fresno.
In softball:
Palomar 3, Rancho Santiago 0--Karrie Schott pitched a complete-game three-hitter and went 2 for 3 with a run batted in to lead Palomar to a nonconference victory at home. Terina Franklin got one of the three hits for the Dons (28-9), extending her hitting streak to nine games.
