Pilots with serious heart, vision and other medical problems were licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration during a recent 27-month period, the House Government Operations subcommittee charged. There were “gross irregularities” in the granting of about 1,000 special flight certificates by the FAA’s top medical officer before he resigned under fire in February, the subcommittee reported. Rep. Cardiss Collins (D-Ill.), who chairs the panel, said the findings warrant an immediate, thorough review of all “special issuance certificates” issued under Dr. Frank Austin Jr., the former federal air surgeon. Austin refused to comment.
