What kind of a policy is it that guides your Sunday Calendar editors . . . publishing a letter from a person clearly advocating violence against me (Calendar Letters, April 26)?

The Times then underlines and endorses this idiocy by publishing a cartoon next to the letter showing this critic, knocked out, his broken glasses lying nearby, a boxer towering over him.

Having done my kind of work for some years, with conscience and a relatively high degree of honesty, I realize that such warring goes with the territory and media-economic competition . . . but I must say, what you have done is hardly in keeping with high journalistic standards.

Is it any wonder that sophisticated readers agree that the Sunday Calendar suffers badly in comparison to, say, the Sunday New York Times’ Section 2?

This cloud does have a silver lining, though:

Your publication of such a letter (and cartoon) will make local newspaper readers and advertisers think about what they’ve been missing, these recent years, in terms of journalistic standards, conscience, integrity and common sense and logic, in your entertainment industry reporting. (I have no quarrel with your national/international reporting.)
