A performance of Puccini’s “La Boheme” in Nashville Wednesday was canceled after students pelted musicians and conductor Amerigo Marino with pennies. The fully staged opera was part of a series presented at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center for 2,400 students from 21 elementary, middle and high schools in the area. Several musicians were struck by the coins, officials said. “The kids started throwing pennies during the first act. That was bad enough,” Marino said. “Then in the second act, just minutes into the performance, a penny struck the concertmaster’s violin, then another one hit a girl’s head. So I said, ‘This is it,’ and stopped the performance.”
