Scott Young of Team USA failed a postgame doping test at the World Hockey Championships in Vienna and has been suspended from international competition for 18 months, the International Ice Hockey Federation announced.
Ephedrine, contained in nasal decongestants and on the IIHF list of prohibited substances, was found in two tests conducted after the United States’ 4-2 loss Monday to Czechoslovakia.
“He had taken cough drops containing ephedrine,” said David McNab, a Hartford Whaler scout involved with the U.S. team. “That can happen with guys who are over here for the first time.”
The suspension will force Young, the Whalers’ No. 1 draft choice last year, to miss the 1988 Calgary Olympics and probably will prompt him to turn pro.
