Television exposure, not intimidation, was the reason the Christian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan burned a cross in a Klansman’s yard in Augusta, Ga., last week, the group said Tuesday. In issuing an public apology to Augusta’s black community, Scott Lowe, grand titan of the Klan, said, “The only purpose of the cross burning was for television filming.” He said the Klan members were conducting a “previously arranged news conference and meeting which included the symbolic burning of the cross.”
