Heavyweight Hunter Scores Lackluster Win Over Gans
In a fight that featured more pushing and shoving than sticking and jabbing, heavyweight Mike Hunter won a unanimous eight-round decision over Mike Gans in Tuesday night’s main event at the Country Club in Reseda.
Hunter (7-0-2) put Gans (10-5) down with a straight right late in the final round, one of the few effective punches landed in the fight.
“Mike just didn’t put it together,” said actor James Caan, Hunter’s manager. “We’re just going to have to work a lot harder, but he’s got the tools.”
Hunter, who makes his home in Woodland Hills, weighed 208 pounds for the bout. Gans, from Long Beach, weighed 255.
Featherweight Dino Garza of Granada Hills boosted his record to 4-0 by stopping Javier Macias of Burbank at 2:16 of the third round of their scheduled four-rounder. It was Garza’s third knockout. Macias dropped to 2-2.
In a six-round junior lightweight bout, Robert Lewis (6-3-3) of Los Angeles won a unanimous decision over Lamont Baker (6-12) of Las Vegas.
