McCarthy Enters Senate Race
SAN DIEGO — Democratic Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy, on the first stop of a whirlwind state tour, officially announced today his intention to challenge Republican Sen. Pete Wilson next year.
McCarthy told reporters in San Diego, where Wilson was mayor before his election to the Senate in 1982, that the announcement fulfills a promise he made earlier this year to state his political plans by May 1. In making his candidacy official, McCarthy joins Secretary of State March Fong Eu, the only other Democrat who has announced her intention to challenge Wilson.
