The Nation : Fund-Raiser Probe Asked
House Democrats filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission asking it to investigate charges that conservative fund-raiser Carl R. (Spitz) Channell violated federal law by using two tax-exempt organizations to finance a media campaign against congressmen opposed to aid for Nicaragua’s rebels. Channell’s organizations, Sentinel and the National Endowment for the Preservation of Liberty, failed to abide by laws that limit the contributions political committees may accept and that require such organizations to disclose the names of contributors, according to the complaint filed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. A spokesman for Channell, Jared S. Cameron, said he could not comment on the complaint because Channell and his attorneys had not had a chance to study it.
