A fire that did more than $2.5 million in damage at the University of California, Davis, veterinary laboratory was the work of the Animal Liberation Front, state fire marshal’s investigators said. The investigators, who appeared at a news conference with university officials, said they expect arrests. A reward of $11,500 was offered for information leading to such arrests. Officials said they doubted that the arsonists wanted a fire of that magnitude. The leaders of two animal rights groups in Sacramento were at odds over the arson--with the leadership of the Animal Rights Direct Action Coalition lauding it, while the more widely known People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals deplored it.
