Hungarians gave supertenor Placido Domingo an ecstatic reception Monday night when he sang in Budapest for the first time in 14 years in a rare appearance in Eastern Europe. The city’s Erkel Theater rang to bravos, rhythmic clapping and calls for “Pla-ci-do” for 50 minutes after the end of the Spanish tenor’s performance in Verdi’s “Aida.” Applause almost brought the performance to a halt after “Celeste Aida,” the tenor’s first aria. “It is marvelous to return to a place where you have had a great success,” Domingo said. “I am happy to return to sing for this wonderful public.” Monday’s performance sold out the first day, but at 50 to 700 forints--around $1 to $15--tickets were still quite cheap in comparison with major Western opera houses.
