Two days of riots by striking police officers prompted Senegal’s National Assembly to disband the nation’s 6,250-member force and President Abdou Diouf ordered the military to patrol the capital of Dakar. Police, upset by two-year prison sentences given two officers for torturing to death a prisoner, began the strike across the West African nation Monday. Diouf suspended the officers and replaced Interior Minister Ibrahima Wone. A government spokesman said the new police agencies should be in place within a few days.
