About 200 people were evacuated from Pacific Bell’s 911 switching station in the 3500 block of 8th Street when fumes from furniture-finishing lacquer invaded the building’s ventilation system. The Los Angeles Fire Department said 20 people were treated at the scene for nausea, dizziness and coughing attributed to the fumes, and three others were taken to the Hospital of the Good Samaritan, where they were reported in good condition. Workers were permitted to return to their jobs after firefighters and members of the hazardous materials team removed the offending materials and used smoke-ejectors to clear the air. A Pacific Bell spokesman said the 911 system was not affected by the incident.
