Redondo Beach : INS Agents Arrest 54 Men
Immigration and Naturalization Service agents arrested 54 men last week along Artesia Boulevard on suspicion of being illegal aliens.
Most of the men have been “granted voluntary departure” to Mexico, El Salvador or Guatemala, their native countries, said Gerald Klippness, an assistant district director for the INS. Two were allowed to stay because they have been in the United States for more than five years and are eligible to apply for amnesty under the new immigration law.
Ten Redondo Beach police officers aided about 30 INS agents in last week’s sweep, which was prompted by complaints from the North Redondo Beach Business Assn. that the men seeking work along the boulevard were loitering or intimidating potential customers, said police Sgt. Jerry Reese.
