President Hosni Mubarak’s National Democratic Party won Egypt’s April 6 election by a huge but diminished majority, according to final results. Mubarak’s party won 345 seats, compared to the 391 it held in February when the 458-member Parliament was dissolved. An alliance grouping the Socialist Labor Party, the Liberal Party and the officially banned but tolerated Muslim Brotherhood won 61 seats to make it the main opposition grouping. The center-right New Wafd Party, the only opposition group represented in the old house, saw its share in the legislature drop to 35 from 57 seats.
