Bill Elliott broke a six-year-old track record in winning the pole position for today’s NASCAR First Union 400 stock car race.
Elliott, in his Ford Thunderbird, drove a lap on the 5/8-mile track at 116.003 m.p.h., breaking the old record of 115.485 m.p.h., set by Dave Marcis in 1981.
