Tennis Roundup : Smid Surprises Jarryd, While Becker Turns Tables on Casal

Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia upset eighth-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden, 7-5, 6-3, Thursday in the second round of the $345,000 Fila Trophy indoor tennis tournament at Milan, Italy.
Top-seeded Boris Becker trounced Sergio Casal of Spain, 6-2, 6-4. Casal upset Becker in a recent Davis Cup match.
In another match, third-seeded Mats Wilander beat Davis Cup teammate Jan Gunnarsson, 6-3, 6-4.
Top-seeded Hana Mandlikova rallied from two service breaks down in the opening set to score a 6-4, 6-1 victory over eighth-seeded Sylvia Hanika and advance to the semifinals of the $150,000 U.S. Women’s Indoor championships at Piscataway, N.J.
The Czech star will play fourth-seeded Lori McNeil, who beat sixth-seeded Wendy Turnbull, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The other semifinal will match second-seeded Helena Sukova against unseeded Gigi Fernandez. Sukova ousted fifth seeded Catarina Lindqvist, 6-4, 6-3, while Fernandez beat Grace Kim, 6-1, 7-6.
