Amid mounting evidence that inhalation of cigarette smoke poses a significant health risk to nonsmokers, a ban on smoking in all public places was endorsed by a 55%-43% margin among Americans surveyed by the Gallup Poll. The survey also showed growing support for outlawing all forms of cigarette advertising. In a 1977 Gallup assessment of the cigarette advertising issue, opposition to a total ban outweighed support by 54% to 36%. Today, 49% favor the total ban and 47% oppose it, the poll found.
