Rabbis Criticize Spy Remark by Weinberger
ATLANTA — Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger has drawn the wrath of 400 Conservative rabbis, who say he encouraged anti-Semites with remarks about Jonathan Jay Pollard, a U.S. military employee convicted of spying for Israel.
The rabbis, who represent the largest branch of Judaism in the United States, criticized Weinberger for saying that Pollard committed the most damaging acts of espionage in the history of the United States.
The remarks “unleased a rash of political cartoons and opened the way for the anti-Semites to pour out their hate messages,” the rabbis said in a resolution passed Wednesday.
