The Nation : N.Y. Politician Indicted

A former Bronx borough president was indicted on charges that he extorted $183,000 from a defense contractor, making him the third high-ranking Bronx Democrat caught up in scandal this year. Stanley Simon, 57, who resigned March 11 in anticipation of the indictment, was charged with extortion from Wedtech Corp., perjury, obstruction of justice and income tax evasion. U.S. Atty. Rudolph Giuliani and Bronx Dist. Atty. Mario Merola announced the indictment, saying an investigation of financially troubled Wedtech was continuing.
