Bradley Filippone and Kenneth Libbrecht, both assistant professors at Caltech, have been named Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellows by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation of New York.

The fellowships, which provide each with $25,000 for research, are annually awarded to young scholars who have demonstrated outstanding potential in science, mathematics or economics.

Filippone is a physicist who is studying the relationship between the structure of the atomic nucleus and the properties and behavior of subatomic particles. Libbrecht, an astrophysicist, conducts research in helioseismology, which uses sound waves to probe the sun’s interior. Earlier this year, Libbrecht was named one of 200 Presidential Young Investigators by the National Science Foundation.
