Sophomore right-hander Jodi Iwafuchi threw her first career shutout and Darcy Stehlik’s bases-loaded single in the second inning drove home the only run as El Camino Real beat Sylmar, 1-0, in a nonleague softball game Tuesday at Sylmar.
It was the Conquistadores’ 59th straight victory, but the state’s longest winning streak almost ended on the last play of the game.
With two outs in the seventh inning and a runner on first, Sylmar’s Michelle Blaha hit a sinking line drive near center fielder Stacy Creal, who made a spectacular tumbling catch to end the game.
“If that ball goes past her it’s at least one run and possibly the game,” Sylmar Coach Jeff Tumin said. “She made a heck of a play. That’s why El Camino has won 59 games in a row. They make the plays and score the runs when they need them.”
El Camino pitcher Beth Silverman, who has been suspended from the team for an indefinite period, missed her third straight game. Silverman will not pitch at Westchester on Thursday.
