Garden Grove : Couple Burned When Propane Stove Explodes

A couple suffered severe burns Friday after a propane stove exploded, demolishing their trailer home, fire officials said.

Thomas Jones, 63, was burned over 25% of his body and his wife, Marie, 61, was burned over 35% of her body, according to Garden Grove Fire Safety Officer Ellen Covey. They were both reported in stable condition at the UCI Medical Center burn ward, Covey said.

The explosion occurred shortly before 7 a.m. in the couple’s trailer parked at Travel Country, 12721 Harbor Blvd., authorities said.

According to Covey, Thomas Jones apparently failed to shut off a valve while he attempted several times to light a propane stove. His wife was asleep, Covey said.

The blast blew out windows and doors, fire officials said. The couple stumbled out of the trailer while an unidentified man entered and shut off the valve, Covey said.

Damage was estimated at about $8,000, officials said.
