UNPEASANT SOUNDS
Imagine waking up on your day off to a record review of such praise (Pet Sounds, “Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares,” by Terry Atkinson, March 1). Words like “seem so heavenly,” “bizarrely beautiful,” “some of the loveliest singing ever recorded,” “overflowing with one-of-a-kind delicacy and passion,” “awe-inspiring” and, finally, “naively angelic.” Wow!!!
I wasted no time in acquiring one of these gems by the Bulgarian peasant women. Does Atkinson know the story of the emperor’s new clothes? Somewhere, Yoko Ono is smiling. It sounded like Yoko’s greatest hits. Gag.
P.S. I thought I played it at the wrong speed for a while.
