Cypress Basketball Coach Resigns
Ron Craig, boys’ basketball coach at Cypress High School for the past nine years, has resigned.
Before he came to Cypress in 1976, Craig spent four seasons as an assistant and three seasons as varsity coach at Burroughs High in Burbank. He was an assistant at Cypress for two years before being named the Centurions’ head coach in 1978.
Craig led Cypress to its only league championship when the Centurions beat Katella for the Empire League title in 1981.
Craig, who has a career record of 228-179, coached 35 players who later played college basketball, including Jeff Fagan (Cal State Long Beach), David Belshe (Utah State) and Grant Taylor (UC Irvine).
“After 18 years, I just thought there were other mountains to climb,” Craig said. “I think it’s time to concentrate more in the classroom.”
Craig will remain at Cypress as an accounting teacher. His position will be open to walk-on candidates.
The Centurions, who finished 10-14 this season, have two starters--Greg Bedford and Bond Weaver--returning next season.
