Wyoming Holds Off Virginia, 64-60, Meets UCLA in Second Round Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY — Eric Leckner scored 22 points, and Fennis Dembo added 16 Thursday night to lead Wyoming to a 64-60 victory over Virginia in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional and into a second-round game Saturday against UCLA.
The Cowboys (23-9) scored their last five points on free throws in the final 1 minute 9 seconds to hold off the Cavaliers (21-10).
Consecutive baskets by Reggie Fox and Leckner put Wyoming ahead for good, 52-48, with 9:45 left. Andrew Kennedy led Virginia with 14 points; John Johnson had 12 and Mel Kennedy 11.
The Cowboys hit only 5 of their first 14 attempts. But they made 21 of their next 37 shots and finished shooting 51%, compared to 48% for Virginia.
