NEW YORK — A veteran police officer was shot and killed Wednesday in a gun battle with two robbery suspects while leading rookie police officers on a training mission, police said.
One of the suspects also was killed in the gunfight and another was arrested later, Police Commissioner Benjamin Ward said.
The slain officer, Detective Louis Miller, had been on the force for 34 years, Deputy Commissioner Alice McGillion said. Miller, 60, was a few months from retirement.
