N.J. Gov. Kean Asks Congress to Block Cut in Education

WASHINGTON — Gov. Thomas H. Kean of New Jersey asked Congress today to thwart Reagan Administration efforts to slash education spending, joining other Republicans who have opposed the proposed reductions.

“No child in America should go to a school that fails to provide a thorough education,” Kean told members of the Senate Budget Committee. “No adult in America should be denied a college education simply because they can’t afford it.”

The Administration wants to reduce this year’s $19.5-billion education budget to $14 billion for the 1988 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

Several GOP lawmakers have been critical of the Administration’s proposed spending reductions. Last month, Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.), the budget panel’s ranking Republican, told Education Secretary William J. Bennett, “I don’t believe you can be serious about this budget.”
