The Nation : Rizzo Will Run for Mayor
Frank Rizzo, former Democratic mayor of Philadelphia, announced that he will challenge Mayor W. Wilson Goode as a Republican candidate. Rizzo, 66, said that he was thrilled to be endorsed by the Republican selection committee, considered tantamount to capturing the nomination. Meanwhile, Goode, 48, who came under sharp criticism for the city’s 1985 handling of the fatal confrontation with the radical group MOVE, said he will run for a second term on the Democratic ticket. After two terms in the mayor’s office from 1971 to 1979 as a Democrat, Rizzo lost the Democratic primary to Goode in 1983, and Goode became the city’s first black mayor. Rizzo switched parties last year.
