Valley : 16 Agencies Get U. S. Funds
Sixteen San Gabriel Valley community service agencies will receive $890,000 in Community Services Block Grant funds to facilitate their work with the poor, according to Henry Knawls of the county Department of Community and Senior Citizens Services.
Los Angeles County received $2.6 million in federal anti-poverty funding and has allocated money to 50 community centers countywide, he said.
The funds are earmarked for homeless shelters, emergency food services for senior citizens, juvenile-delinquency programs, emergency dental services, career counseling, employment services, housing assistance and domestic-violence shelters, Knawls said.
Among the San Gabriel Valley agencies to receive funds are: the El Monte Union High School District, which will use the funds for youth employment programs; the West San Gabriel Valley Juvenile Diversion Project in Temple City, which will use the money for delinquency prevention programs; the House of Ruth in Pomona, a shelter for battered women; the Mid-Valley Community Mental Health Council in El Monte; the San Gabriel Valley YWCA in West Covina and the Pomona Neighborhood Center, Knawls said.
