The Nation : Park Flight Restrictions
Flights over national parks, including the Grand Canyon where 25 people died in a mid-air collision, would be restricted by twin bills introduced by Rep. Tony Coelho (D-Merced), House Democratic whip, and Sen. Spark M. Matsunaga (D-Hawaii). Flights would be banned below the rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and limited to 2,000 feet over the valley rim of Yosemite in California and 9,500 feet above sea level over Haleakala Park, a dormant volcano on the Maui, Hawaii, coast. The legislation also requires a three-year study by the Interior Department and Federal Aviation Administration to determine how low airplanes should be permitted to fly over all national parks.
