Orange County Prep Soccer : Canyon Takes Over League Lead, Gives Villa Park First Loss

Nigatu Gefawson scored with four minutes left to give the Canyon High School boys’ soccer team a 1-0 Century League victory over Villa Park Wednesday at Villa Park.
It was the first loss of season for Villa Park (3-1-1, 13-1-2). The victory gives Canyon (4-0-1, 14-7-1) sole possession of first place in the league. Canyon ended Esperanza’s 61-game unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory in the Orange Tournament on Dec. 20.
Goalkeeper Jim Frize had seven saves for Canyon, and recorded his ninth shutout of the season.
El Modena 2, Foothill 2--Ralph Hallack and Greg Van Loy scored for the Vanguards (1-2-2, 6-5-2). Matt Reback and Joe Carolyn scored for Foothill (3-1-1 in league).
In the Freeway League:
Sunny Hills 4, Fullerton 1--Steve Fichtelberg scored three goals to lead the Lancers (4-1, 9-2) at home. Carlos Miramontes scored Sunny Hills’ other goal. Fullerton is 2-3 in league.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 3, Laguna Beach 2--Devin Diaz, Brian Fleming and Brian Casagranda each scored in the first half to lead the Hawks (5-0, 14-3-2) at home. Fleming has 19 goals this season. Laguna Beach (3-1-1, 7-4-2) rallied in the second half on goals by Jeff Poe and Rob Oliver.
Woodbridge 3, Trabuco Hills 2--Woodbridge’s Pat Ghesquere scored the winning goal with five minutes left. Jeff Smith scored two goals for Woodbridge (3-1-1, 9-7-3). Jeff Dooley and Tom Steed scored for Trabuco Hills. Woodbridge goalie Mike Goodman had 16 saves.
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 2, Corona del Mar 1--Left wing Garth Tamblyn scored with a minute left on an assist from Billy Castanha to lead the Sailors (3-2, 9-5-1) at Corona del Mar.
Tustin 3, Estancia 2--Scott Feldman scored in the first half to give the Tillers a 2-1 lead, and Kevin Villar added an insurance goal to pace Tustin (2-1-2, 9-5-3) at home.
In the South Coast League:
San Clemente 4, Capistrano Valley 0--Tom Dougherty scored two goals and Kevin Hall and Marco Solferino added one each to lead the Tritons (2-2-1, 5-7-3) at home.
In girls’ action:
In the Angelus League:
Mater Dei 4, St. Joseph 1--Right wing Amy Sissung scored three goals and Saule Sadunas had one to lead the Monarchs (5-1, 11-5-2) at St. Joseph.
In the Orange League:
Valencia 3, Orange Lutheran 0--Kameron Sweeney scored three goals in the second half to lead the Tigers (5-0, 12-6-1) at Orange Lutheran.
Brea-Olinda 4, Anaheim 0--Teresa Schueppert scored three goals and Carrie Lewis addded one to lead the Wildcats (4-1, 6-6-1) at home. Goalkeeper Shannon Hoy had nine saves for Brea to earn her fourth shutout this season.
