Beverly Hills-based MGM/UA Communications Co. posted a jump in operating income for the first quarter of fiscal 1987 that ended Nov. 30, 1986, to $18.23 million from $13.74 million in the prior period. The firm attributed first-quarter profit primarily to the result of its overall performance from home-video and TV syndication operations. MGM/UA Home Video, which was acquired in the fourth quarter of fiscal 1986, distributes both current MGM/UA product as well as titles from the approximately 3,000 films in the MGM library.
