Intra-Asia Imports Up

VANCOUVER, Canada — There are increasing opportunities for Canadian businessmen to trade in the Asia-Pacific region, but they are meeting increased competition from an unlikely source--the Asia-Pacific nations themselves, those attending a seminar here have been told.
“It’s becoming increasingly clear that Canada’s future in the Asia-Pacific region will rely heavily on how well we compete with the developing Asia-Pacific countries, which are more and more looking inward toward each other as exporters and importers,” said M. Aldo Nicolai, international trade vice president for the Royal Bank of Canada.
Nicolai said the share of developing countries’ imports from other Asian countries rose to 47% in 1983, compared to 36% in 1963.
