Herkimer Beats Cypress, 78-65
Herkimer County College defeated Cypress, 78-65, Monday in the first round of the Rotary National Shootout at Mesa College in Mesa, Ariz.
The Generals, 11-0 and ranked No. 3 in the nation by the National Junior College Athletic Assn., took control of the game with 10 minutes remaining. Behind center Mitchell Williams’ game-high 33 points, Herkimer expanded its five-point halftime lead to 17 points and the Chargers never threatened.
Cypress was led by Dave Kirksey’s 16 points. The sophomore center was 7 for 11 from the field. Teammates Andy Olivarez and Kris Brodowski added 12 each. Mike Kotzin, a freshman from Buena Park High School, had 9 rebounds and 6 points off the bench.
The Chargers (10-9) meet Navajo, Ariz., in one of today’s consolation semifinal games at 1:30.
