The Nation : New Jobs, Layoffs Forecast

The nation’s economy will generate 2 million new jobs in 1987, even though widespread layoffs will continue, according to an analysis by the Conference Board, a business-supported, nonprofit research group in New York. About 90% of the new jobs will be in the service sector, while only 10% will be in goods-producing industries, the group said. Unemployment will remain at a relatively high 7%, leaving about 8 million people out of work, it said. Job prospects are expected to remain strong in New England, the mid-Atlantic region and the Southeast, while the labor market in the Southwest shows little improvement.
