2 Men Control House Fire With Garden Hoses
Two men who climbed on the roof of a two-story Newport Beach house with garden hoses Sunday were credited by authorities with controlling a fire at the residence until firefighters arrived.
The owner of the house in the 2800 block of Carob Street suffered burns and smoke inhalation, Newport Beach Fire Department Dispatcher Mary Shatzel said.
The fire gutted an upstairs bedroom of the house, but was almost completely under control by the time firefighters arrived, Shatzel said. The unidentified good Samaritans, believed to neighbors or gardeners, had left by the time firefighters arrived, she said.
Owner Henry Grum, 55, received second- and third-degree burns on his hands attempting to move a television, and suffered smoke inhalation, Shatzel said. Grum was treated by paramedics and then transported to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach.
