SOPRANO EARNS RAVES IN LONDON FOR HER ‘LUCIA’

LONDON — American soprano June Anderson had a rapturous reception in her stage debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, this week when she sang the demanding title role in “Lucia di Lammermoor.”
Her partner in Gaetano Donizetti’s opera, veteran Spanish tenor Alfredo Kraus as Lucia’s lover, Edgardo, shared in the bravos and applause from a sell-out audience of 2,200 Tuesday night.
Kraus, who is 59, made his Covent Garden debut in 1959 in the same opera--singing opposite Joan Sutherland--when Anderson was 5.
Anderson stopped the show and took three curtain calls at the end of Lucia’s mad scene in the third act.
Hundreds of chrysanthemums and daffodils rained on the stage, thrown by aficionados from balcony side seats.
“It couldn’t have been better--Lucia sings all night, so she gets the last bow,” a happy Anderson said in a dressing-room interview.
