Pakistan President Zia ul-Haq swore in a slimmed-down Cabinet of 16 members to replace the 36-member body that resigned Saturday after ethnic rioting in Karachi, the nation’s biggest city, that claimed 185 lives. According to an official list of the new Cabinet, six ministers retained their posts, including Interior Minister Mohammed Aslam Khattuck and Foreign Minister Sahabzada Yaqub Khan. The Interior Ministry had been criticized by opposition politicians and newspapers for the Karachi riots. Government officials said later that the resignations had nothing to do with the riots.
