The Internal Revenue Service, seeking to crack down on tax evaders, said it is sending warning letters to 28,835 banks, savings and loan associations, credit unions and brokerage houses that have at least 50 customers who have either supplied incorrect or no Social Security numbers. The IRS matches information on 1099 forms, reports from financial institutions on interest and dividends earned, with tax returns to determine if there was underreporting of income.
