The front-page article (Dec. 9), “Shirt Salesman Wins Lotto Jackpot of $129 Million,” might at least have been buried on a back page with an opposing editorial.
Prominent publicity for huge lottery winnings promotes greater waste of resources by the poor, encourages desires for wealth without work, and diverts funds from productive investment in business enterprise or consumer goods.
Financing education from gambling is similar to a parent-teacher association dealing in drugs instead of bake sales.
