Iowa State’s football program has been put on a two-year probation and stripped of four football scholarships for the 1987-88 academic year, but the Cyclones apparently escaped a much harsher penalty by firing Coach Jim Criner last month.
Sanctions that would have barred postseason and television appearances for a year were suspended “in support of actions taken by the university prior to the hearing in this case,” the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. said.
