NATO Chief Had Cancer Surgery, Pentagon Discloses
WASHINGTON — Gen. Bernard W. Rogers, the commander-in-chief of NATO military forces, underwent successful cancer surgery last week and will return to his duties in Europe in early January, the Pentagon said Thursday.
Spokesmen for the Defense Department and Rogers had previously acknowledged that the general checked into Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Dec. 10 and underwent surgery the next day. But they refused last week to disclose the nature of the surgery or discuss Rogers’ condition.
The Pentagon statement said Rogers had undergone surgery “for removal of a cancerous prostate gland.”
