‘Courageous Action’ of Anaya
Your editorial characterizing Gov. Anaya’s action in commuting the death sentences of all the inmates on New Mexico’s Death Row, is outrageous. The governor flaunted the laws of his state in order to satisfy his personal bias against the death penalty. Rose Bird at least laid her future on the line in facing the electorate in California on the same issue. Anaya waited until he had nothing to lose before he ignored the wishes of a majority of the electorate of his state in commuting the death sentences of these murderers. “Courageous,” nonsense. Cowardly would be more apt.
