3 FILM INSTITUTE AWARD RECIPIENTS

The American Film Institute has announced the 1987 recipients of the Maya Deren Award, which recognizes the contributions from independent video and film artists. Dara Birnbaum, Robert Breer and Ed Emshwiller will each receive $5,000.
Birnbaum is a video artist based in New York who earned attention with her avant-garde approach to television images.
Breer is considered an innovator in contemporary animation and uses illustrations of quick-changing images adapted to music.
Emshwiller began making films in 1959 and now is the dean of film and video at CalArts.
The 1987 AFI Maya Deren Award is funded through a grant from The Bohen Foundation.
