Kennedy House Campaign Set Spending Record

BOSTON — Contenders for the House seat being vacated by Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill Jr., the retiring Speaker, spent more than $4.4 million, it was reported Sunday. It was the most expensive congressional campaign in Massachusetts history and the winner, Democrat Joseph Kennedy, 34, spent the most--$1.7 million. The previous record in the state, $2.5 million, was set in 1982.
